Registered pupils of compulsory school age, are required by law to attend school.
Regular and full-time attendance is essential if children are to benefit from their school career.
Optimum levels of attendance can only be achieved when responsibility is accepted by all concerned.
The school has a key responsibility in promoting good attendance.
Aims to ensure:
The school has consistent, standardised registration procedures.
Regular attendance and punctuality, is given a high priority.
Attendance is monitored effectively.
The identification of pupils whose attendance causes concern, and where intervention and action may be required to secure improvements.
The Education Welfare Officer has access to clear and relevant information.
Parents are made aware of their responsibilities.
Accurate reports on attendance are provided to all concerned.
Practice and procedures:
Only the school can authorise absence.
An absence is counted as authorised/unauthorised for specific reasons.
If a pupil is absent, parents / carers are asked to inform the school by phone as soon as possible on the first day of absence.
Lateness is actively discouraged and where no satisfactory reason is given, will be recorded.
Attendance / lateness issues are monitored and where concerns remain the case will be passed on to the Education Welfare Officer.
